Hello friends! 🌸 Welcome to yet another book review, today, we will dive deep into dark romance books. Before you start reading this review, do go to the first book review of the Legacy of Gods series by Rina Kent. You can click here to read it and come back! The continuation books of the series are incredibly hard to keep spoiler-free but I will do my best to make sure that you do not get too spoiled because oh my god, so many things happened in this book. This book is well deserved at the rate of 18+ so please, stay away from this, if you cannot handle BDSM, very detailed s*x scenes and violence. If you can and did though… Welcome, Let’s get into it! 🥹
The first book of the series was very dark and very disturbing and though I loved these aspects of the story, the writing was very amateur and it just got 3 stars from me. I am no professional critic but I’ve been reading these books since high school and writing reviews even longer, so I did not expect much from the second book not to lie. I thought that at best; this book would be like the first one, it would get a similar rating and depending on the character, I would appreciate it more or less. Boy. BOY, I WAS WRONG.
I think in God of Pain, I got used to the idea of these kiddos being part of the mafia and living their lives as if they were some kind of mafia boss. It did not bother me as much as the first book did but nevertheless, it was quite exaggerated and these things -thankfully- do not happen in real life. But, if you think that what you are reading is just a piece of literature, all the urge and try to make sense of things happening goes away and you just enjoy a very spicy book. That’s it.
As I have mentioned prior, I wasn’t expecting too much from this book to be honest with you because the first book was OK but I think I enjoyed the characters and the storyline better than this one although the adult part of these books bothers me a lot however at the end of reading I learned that our author actually had another series for the stories of these kids’ parents. So, whether this was a foreshadowing or just promoting the characters it didn’t work and I do want to read the parents’ version of these books as well; I doubt they are any less dirty if they are not dirtier. Our main characters are Annika and Creighton; Annika is the princess of the Russian mafia; her entire personality is purple and she loves animals. She was raised like a caged little birdie, however, her feisty character shows itself more and more as the story progresses. Our male character Creigh on the other hand, is a completely different story. In the first book, he was portrayed as someone who is silent most of the time and just chokes down food, and although I did get the vibe that something was incredibly wrong with him, I did not think that it would be this bad. I will not spoil his background for you because it was very painful to read and I did cry a couple of times throughout his story but he had been adopted by very loving parents after tragically losing his parents whom we learn about more in the middle of the book I would say. He is very much interested in BDSM and he practises it as safely as possible, however, he now has a new obsession and her name is Annika. He hates that he likes her he hates the fact that he is interested in her however the tension between them is something undeniable and once they understand what they feel towards each other (although I wouldn’t consider their relationship in the beginning as the regular relationship) day and falling harder and harder trying to solve and work through their differences.
A lot of things happen in the book and at one point Annika had to do something incredibly bad. It breaks her, it breaks people around her, but it felt like it was very much necessary for the character growth our characters had after this happened. I think the writing and the character development of this book was better than the first one however the absence of the first couple was quite unnecessary I would think. I have read a lot of series which focuses on a different character in the same friend group and often they are very much intertwined with each other and they are communicating regularly however in this book, Killian and Gywn was completely absent and at one point I thought to myself either the author did not really want to focus on side characters which could contribute immensely by the way, or this is just her way of writing.
I ended up giving this book 4⭐s and the one star went off because of this “absence” of side characters and their development, it is just sad to see that a lot of good characters that could be focused on are not given enough justice and there will be one book which suddenly focuses on them and we will be like: “Oh, I didn’t know this character was like this.” I think I love reading the characters’ development throughout the series more than anything else because when their story gets stuck in one book only it is easy to forget and it doesn’t touch something in your chest. Samantha Young for example does an amazing job on this kind of storyline because in every book you read from the series (On Dublin Street series for example), you keep seeing these characters which you read before and they keep being a part of the current plot and contribute to the story which is such a heartwarming thing to read because you connect with these characters when you are reading the book and it is great to see them that they are doing good and they are happy.
Nevertheless, besides this absence of characters, it was a very good spicy book and I cannot wait to read more because these primal males are my recent obsession apparently. What would happen if I saw someone talk to me like that in real life? I would call the goddamn police but here we are with imaginary men. Until I see you in my next post friends, bye! ✨❤️
