Unravel Me by Tahereh Mafi (Shatter Me #2)

“The truth,” he says, “is a painful reminder of why I prefer to live among the lies.”

Aaron Warner

Hello friends! I am back with a review of my most recent favourite series Shatter Me! The second book was even better than the first one and I cannot tell you enough how excited I am to continue the story of Juliette and everything around her. I usually give breaks between the books in series; however, I was too excited to give too much for the break and here I am with the review of the second book for you! Interestingly, I enjoyed this way more than the first one and I hope that this series will continue like that. 💁🏻‍♀️

The story starts with words we were left off. Our main character, Juliette, is now adapting to her new life in Omega Point She is very excited to learn more about her powers. She is still quite scared of hurting other people and her thoughts on using her powers don’t really change until the end of the book; however, it is very clear that we see a progressive road for her as she tries to accept herself as she is, her powers and tries to figure out the ways which she can use her powers to help other people. We still get a lot of insight into what she thinks and during the first book I mentioned in my previous review that her thoughts were very scattered around the place, so it was hard for me to follow up since she seemed to change her mind very quickly and very often. However, in this book, I felt like we had a more solid view of life and the world around her coming from her and it was a very clear indication that she was growing as a person.

Omega point is basically an establishment dedicated to people who have these powers coming from an unknown source of energy. the head of the establishment is a man called Castle. Castle itself also has powers and I don’t think saying this will be a spoiler at this point so I’m going to tell it; he can move things around which is basically called as telekinesis. There are various side characters who are introduced in the first book however, we get a better insight into them in the second book as well. We do not see many of the people who do not have powers but since they are the family and friends of the ones who have powers, I don’t think that it is very much necessary since we already have a lot of side characters who have roles in the book. Which I like very much.

I really enjoy books with side characters who have solid backstories and contributions to the story, and I am so glad to say that Unravel Me gives you that. From Kenji to Castle, the girls and many others have good interactions with our main characters. Of course, it is still quite odd to see teenagers with this amount of power in a world which is basically destroyed, But I think this is exactly what a young adult dystopian romance novel is supposed to be so I’m not going to get into that too much.

As far as the story goes, we learn more about Aaron Warner, who was introduced as the morally grey, villainous character in the first book. However, if you follow bookstagram accounts on Instagram you very well know that he is no villain, and he is actually one of the main characters of the story. By no means I am telling that he’s a good person because it is obvious that he is far from being a nice, good person however we all know that Warner and Juliette have something in between. Seeing Warner so human throughout the book was incredibly well written because despite the fact that she is very indecisive regarding how her “heart feels”, the vulnerability that was portrayed by Warner towards her broke my heart into millions of pieces. And I must say that I’m very upset with Juliette because she does something incredibly rude to Warner and shatters him into millions of pieces. I try to understand where she comes from however, she is acting like too much of a teenager up until the last few pages of the book. And girl you didn’t really need a hole in your chest to understand who is good and who is bad LOL.

I can imagine what to expect from the third book says it ended with her saying that she’s going to leave her gloves behind and accept herself as so she is, but I didn’t enjoy how it was wrapped up with Warner and Adam’s situation. To be quite frank I wish Adam all the best in the world because he is one of the best-written characters in the series however, I’m rooting for Warner I don’t care what you think of me. Also, hands down Kenji and James are my favourite side characters and I believe author Mafi actually wanted us to feel like that and she is successful with it.

I don’t think that I’m going to give too much of a break between the books because I’m very much enjoying the series even though I am past the age of enjoying young adult fiction. For now, it was a very good second book for me and the writing got way better than the first book. I’m 100% sure that it will get better and better as the story goes and I truly hope that this series -which was supposed to be a trilogy and ended up being six books- won’t get boring as the series goes on.

It has been a good while since I enjoyed a dystopian romance novel so 5⭐s as it is.

See you in my next post!  ❤

  1. I read the series before the last year ended and enjoyed it thoroughly! Also, Kenji is hands down the best character in the series. I might be obsessed with him rather than Warner, but everyone has their preferences . I hope you enjoy reading further, it’s still a long way and many more characters ahead! Enjoy 😀
