Defy Me by Tahereh Mafi (Shatter Me #5)

Hello friends! Welcome to another blog post, thank you so much for taking the time to be here, I am finally back with one of my latest reads, and yes, since February, I haven’t been reading much, mainly because of my dentist visits and work visits here and there. However, I plan to come back strong with my current read, I am very hopeful and terminated to read more this month… well, at least what’s left of it. Nevertheless, today’s book is another favourite of mine from the Shatter Me series and I still cannot comprehend how much happened in this book, and how much I loved it. Without me making you read any longer, let’s get into the review, shall we?

There is so much going on in this book. Like, so much. First of all, I am aware of the negative thoughts about the continuation of the series but let me be honest with you and explain why everything couldn’t end in the first three books. First of all, a seventeen-year-old being a Supreme Commander of a continent and every adult who built the Reestablishment would be fine with it? Please, please. It is beyond being realistic. Yes, some things could’ve been done differently than this but I am a ride-or-die for these books and characters and even if Mafi made them roll in mud and dirt the entire book like piglets, I would be completely fine with it. Nevertheless, she tried to tie the ends and it was a good try, it had my favourite characters of all time and reading them made me happy enough, so I finished the book in an instant hehe.

In the 5th book of the series, we end up learning a lot about the past and the reality of The Reestablishment. We learn why it was founded and what was the purpose of it. It exactly starts from where it’s left in the previous book; Restore Me, and I must say that I like this slightly more because it was a good pace of change from what was happening in the series. The fact that our character ended up learning about her roots was refreshing because ever since our kids took over Sector 45, nothing has been the same. It was quite hectic in the previous four books but in this book, although there were a lot of action moments the focus was mainly on the character development. I really don’t want to spoil anything in this book mainly because I wasn’t expecting half of the things that have happened as well. But of course just like good old young adult dystopian series our main character shines brighter and brighter and I don’t know how I feel about her family what has been done to her, and recent changes in her however I am not complaining too much about how this book unravelled some certain details that we have been looking for regarding the Reestablishment. Yes, I was expecting Juliette, to have some sort of key role within this world however I was always expecting that the role she had would be something that she had gained over the pain and suffering she had endured for the past couple of years. Apparently, it was planned way before is there any of our characters remembered.

Again, I enjoyed reading about the disruptive image of their family, how they stood against it, and how kids with so much pain and abilities could simply make wrong right or try to make wrong right. Almost all of the characters had some sort of crucial moments which opened their eyes, and they started seeing these details we weren’t able to recognise before. Aaron, Kenji, Nazeera, basically everyone Had a life-turning moment within this book specifically that I believe will affect them in a good way during the last book. I am quite sad that the next week is the final of the series and I do think that in the future I will hold this series very dearly in my heart however I ended up giving some break because I simply don’t want to say goodbye to the world our author created but overall I’m very happy how the series is going.

Until I see you in my next post, take care!
