It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover

Hi friends! I hope you are doing great and welcome back to another blog post. Today I will talk about one of my January reads, which I started months ago but failed to finish until I had the power to do so. This is my second book from Colleen Hoover and I will start my words with exactly what I said in the previous review (if you haven’t read it, please check November 9 here!) I am a simple reader who does not look into the authors and the drama around them. As a literature graduate, this was what I trained to do and if a book is genuinely good, I will keep reading the author regardless. So, with that aside, let’s get into the second book I have ever read from Colleen Hoover, and frankly; I am in love with this genre. I am in love with the language. I am in love with the fact of how mundane yet so touching everything in this book. 🌸 It was laughter, heartbreak, tears and all these emotions all together in a setting which can happen so easily to anyone, I just loved it and I am currently reading the second book and loving that too!

I always get obsessed with books and you may be thinking, Melek, what is the matter with you?
I wish I knew! I have no idea! But I am so happy that it f*cking hurts.
But before anything, you probably know however I would like to inform you that this review will include spoilers to some extent and the book revolves around a lot of important topics which may upset some, these include domestic violence, thoughts of suicie and death. Be aware and do not upset yourself please. 🫂

Let’s set my fangirling aside and talk about the book, shall we? ❤️

The book follows the story of Lily Bloom and Atlas Corrigan, from the moment they have met to the very end, two adults staring at each other in the street. I am not sure what I was expecting from this book, I have been seeing this on Instagram and booktok with the movie whining from everyone (apparently they did not like the casting); after reading it and not checking anything else, I still do not have any idea about the cast and how fitting they are but damn the book kept me on chokehold entire time.

Atlas, who is homeless the day they have met is a lonely boy at his last year of highschool and he has nobody. He tries to survive in an abandoned house in a small town which seems to be right behind Lily’s house. Lily has been raised in an abusive home, her father endlessly hurting her mother. The pain they both had to endure in their young years completely make sense since we see how close they two have grown in time. They both needed someone who could understand and ease the pain they have been living in, so the two main characters eventually got closer. Lily kept helping Atlas with food and water, Atlas kept helping her with his abusive father and relieved her pain just by existing. It was incredibly heart warming to see the interactions between them, mainly because I myself have several close friends from childhood, whom I still talk with and meet with to this day on a regular basis. The fact that the things they went through their entire life is so mundane but so well written… I believe this is why I have been enjoying the authors’ books. although this is the second one only, I know I will enjoy the books mainly because how well they are written about life. Simply, life.

They grow and they do not have any connection after their seperation, from the diaries Lily wrote to Ellen (I know, cheesy), we get an insight of how she felt and how their time went together. Lily reads these diaries simply to remember him, although entire book she mentions that she “has to move on” and “have closure” as if it would be possible. Girl. If you could have, you would have and I am so glad that you didn’t because you deserved him. He deserved you. You both were made for each other.

Lily meets with Ryle Kincaid, the second male lead of the book and eventually they get married, however, things do get weird at one point for her. The life she had chosen, the man she had fallen in love turns out to be… abusive. Unfortunately, Lily finds herself in his mother’s place all of a sudden, after ignoring all thered flags about Ryle. I personally do not think that Ryle is some sort of evil, what he had done to her is not acceptable and I think he should lock himself somewhere and do not ever get close to a woman but he wasn’t doing these things to Lily simply out of spite. He is as broken as our main characters and the only thing he can do is get into therapy, heal and be the best version of himself. My heart ached for him too but these relationships with any sign of abuse (whether it is mental or physical) are doomed and there is no point in trying to make them work.

Well… Lily thought so too. Now that they have something more important than their feelings, she had to “break the circle” and get rid of the situation that she has been in. And I am so proud of her. So. So. So proud of her. She has to protect her doughter and while doing that, she has to make sure that their baby have a good relationship with her father. I am glad that she chose to keep him in her life too, it should be Emmy’s decision afterall.

Like November 9, the book ends with semi-closure. Eventually, she tells Atlas that she is ready and the book ends right there. I am not sure if the second book was necessary, even if I didn’t read it I think I would be happy to see that they both were ready after everything life has thrown to them and give what they have between them a try. I am happy that it ended with them.

Overall, I was incredibly impressed with this book. I will read some more of the second book to decide how it is but It Ends With Us ended me too.

Until I see you in my next post! Take care! ⭐❤️

  1. Personally, I didn’t like it as much. The writing felt too bland in the first half, though I related to some aspects. But everyone has different views, and I’m glad you liked it!
