I want to have a connection with someone. I want to be needed by someone. I want the confidence to feel like it’s okay to live.
Yuta Okkotsu
Hello friends! 🌸 Welcome to another blog post, today is about my favourite manga of the past few years, Jujutsu Kaisen. I first met with Jujutsu Kaisen world with its anime, something I never do. I usually prefer reading manga and then enjoying the anime and even though this time was completely different, because of the quality of the anime, both are going head to head for me. Since I’m reading the manga chapter by chapter and getting the volumes as they are published, I thought the best option for the review part would be the arc reviews as they go on. There are currently 13 completed arcs and we will focus on each one in each review post! Let’s get into the first arc Cursed Child, shall we? ✨
Since this will be a series of reviews, I think it would be best for me to explain what is Jujutsu Kaisen about. Jujutsu Kaisen is in a world full off curses which appear from the negativity of human emotions and something called cursed energy. These monstrous beings are hunted and exorcised by Jujutsu Sorcerers, people who have the ability to control the cursed energy within their bodies. They are trained in Jujutsu Sorcerer schools to fight the curses and exorcist them. There are three important families in the JJK world and the hierarchy among the sorcerers is pretty solid. These families have special cursed techniques that come from your blood, and throughout the series, we see many characters with these special abilities. Overall, it ended up being one of my favourite manga worlds because of the rich characters, plot and structure it is built with.
The Cursed Child arc focuses on Yuta Okkotsu, a 16-year-old boy who ended up having a very powerful curse after losing his best friend and young love. In the first chapter, we see Yuta in the same position as Yuji, in front of Gojo Satoru and ready to be executed because he is so tired of hurting other people. His curse, Rika, is considered the queen of curses because of her power. There is a levelling system in the world and we see get to see it in the first arc as well. Rika is not only a special grade curse but also a curse with sense. This is very crucial for the upcoming arcs since lower-grade curses are incapable of thinking, speaking or anything that makes them remotely close to the human being.
Though Yuta was ready to end it all and free his love from him, Gojo Satoru ends up helping him to find his way. He starts Jujutsu High and gets many friends, learns about his powers and the real nature of Rika, whom he thought to be cursed. Of course, as the beginning of a series, JJK 0 was an amazing start to give an insight into the universe, characters and possible villains of the story. We also get to see the political side of the Jujutsu world and the corruption within the three big families. I wanted to see Yuta in earlier chapters in upcoming arcs but he made a great entrance nevertheless. I believe JJK is one of the manga series you need to read if you enjoy shounen with some edge and paranormal beings! Give it a chance!
Until I see you in my next blog friends, take care! 🖖🏻❤
