Weathering With You (Tenki No Ko) – Manga Review

It has been a while since I’ve read a good old Japanese manga and considering that I have been breathing with them for years now, it makes me sad that I haven’t been spending much time on things I love the most.

Tenki No Ko is one of the movies I’ve wanted to watch, however, when I saw the manga in my local comic shop, I got it without thinking. I usually read the manga before I watch the adaptations of them, and I must say that I’m glad that I did the same with this one as well.

It is a short trilogy about two young children, Tokyo is under the rain. There is a story, an ancient story about the Children of the Sun, and it is often said that their connection to the weather actually helps them to control the weather and bring the sun back. Our characters; Hodaka and Hina meet right after our male character Hodaka arrives in Tokyo after escaping the small village he was born and raised. She offers him a burger without saying anything and fate connects them together right there. Their second meeting happens when Hodaka tries to save Hina from some suspicious “men” and though they argue, their journey to friendship and the sweetest kind of love begins.

They decide to start a business since it rains in Tokyo non-stop, and a lot of people need the sun for their special days. Hina and Hodaka, along with Hina’s little brother Nagi start their business by getting requests from people who need sun. Though everything goes practically well, the adult side of our story goes kind of sad, mainly because our two main adult leads; Natsumi and Keisuke learn that the only way for the sun to come back permanently is that the child of the sun must sacrifice herself/himself to the weather. This part however completely open to your understanding. One can understand the world beyond the sky as heaven, it can be understood as a parallel universe or something completely else. This is what I actually like about Shinkai’s stories. Though you get solid clues throughout the story, a lot of mythical things are left open-ended, this way you can interpret everything in the way you want to create a cohesive story.

I mainly thought that she needed to be above for the sun to come back because the sun is lonely since the last child of the sun. She simply needed a friend I imagined. Hodaka loves her quite a lot, in his innocent way and when she decides to make one more wish from the sun… He basically does everything in order to take her back.

I believe this was one of the softest things I’ve read for a good while. Shinkai never disappoints me, somehow the stories manage to touch my heart one way or another. I will watch the movie as soon as possible as well, but for my good old manga readers, please give this short series a time. It is totally worth it.

Until my next post, see ya! 💕
