It has been one amazing month of rollerskating and I am comfortable to say that I have finally found something that I can stick to without feeling bad about myself!
A lot of things happened during November and December actually. I am considering myself a one-month skater mainly because I got my first pair of skates in November however I was working full-time and I wasn’t able to skate every single day so I didn’t have much to consider as “progress”. The actual change happened when I quit my job and changed my pair of skates even though I wasn’t that good at it.
You may be wondering why I went from a very inexpensive and budget-friendly pair of skates to one of the most well-known skates. Well, the thing is that with my old pair of skates, I wasn’t really able to do much since I didn’t have the options of loosening the skates, loosening the wheels, or doing any other customization in order to move easier.
Not only that; immediately after I started skating with them one of the bearings started to fall as I skated, so it caused me to lose my balance since one of my wheels was touching the ground earlier than the boot itself so even this little issue with the speed actually made me fall a lot of times and only then I realized that something was wrong with the skates, not with my beginner “abilities”. I ended up taking my skates to Decathlon and the moment the salesperson got the skates from my hands he started turning the wheels and said something regarding “the two wheels are not working properly”.
Even though they made an issue of taking the product back since I have used them a couple of times before because the product had problems with its wheels they had to take it back and I got my money back as gift cards. While using my Oxelo skates, I researched a lot about the skating community and the anatomy of skates as I tried to learn. One of the main things I realized that I had done wrong was the fact that my skate plate wasn’t made out of aluminum, it was made out of plastic and this turned out to be very dangerous if you want to get more advanced in skating. I decided to invest a little bit and get one of the higher-quality skates since I won’t be able to change my skates very often anyways.

I’ve been watching videos on YouTube and on Instagram about a brand called Moxi Skates. I didn’t know how to get them, the shipping fee was quite high to Turkey. However, to my luck, I found a skate shop here in Turkey that sells Moxi Beach Bunnies and Lollies. To my research, Lolly requires a lot of knowledge and since the boot itself is not very supportive (it’s made out of suede), I wanted to keep myself safe and decided to get the Beach Bunny since the boot itself was not as flexible and the plate was aluminum and everything regarding the skate was quite well.
I am so glad that I ended up choosing Beach Bunny Strawberry Lemonade, not because of the aesthetic of the skates, but because of the support, the customization options, and how safe it makes me feel on them. Immediately after I put them on I realized that I was riding a horse and these skates ended up upgrading me to a goddamn Tesla.
There are various reviews regarding the boat itself, saying that it is not as comfortable as the suede or real leather boots, however, my feet are quite narrow and I don’t have many bones sticking up and even though my size is quite big regarding my height (EU 40) I had no issues with the boots. From the moment I put them on, they were quite comfortable, they were not as flexible as my leather boots but after some breaking in they fit me perfectly while still having this safe support on my ankles so I don’t feel like I’m going to break something.
After the skate upgrade I started trying a lot more tricks including turning, transitions, jumping and some dancing moves as well. After one month I am comfortable to say that I feel very comfortable on skates. For the first couple of weeks, I had an “adjusting time” when I needed some time to get used to the skates immediately after I put them on. This changed only last week, I ended up skating every single day and felt so comfortable from the moment I put them on, without needing extra time to get used to them, I was just warming up around the court and right after that I started trying new tricks.
I am comfortable with forward and backward going, doing some dips, and transitions from forward to backward and I’m still working on my backward to forwards transitions (mainly trying jumping and bunny hops), I am trying to get used to the shoot the duck trick and HEZ, crab walk, etc.
I didn’t even try doing spins or spread eagles or anything that requires my feet to be in opposite directions while going to the same direction, because I’m not very comfortable with them but I’m trying to get more comfortable while doing my transitions in longer moves.
I do fall, a lot. I’m not scared of it. I did unfortunately fracture my right collarbone while I was trying something. I went to the doctor and after the x-ray, they told me that they can’t do anything to that area unless the bone sticks out of my skin (what the actual fuck) and since the fracture is quite small and thin they ended up not letting me skate for a week and a half. Still, I feel a lot better now and I’m doing my best on skates again!
It has been an incredible month for me because I didn’t know how much I would end up loving this hobby so I am hoping to get better and do my best on skates. I do have a small video that I shared on my new skating Instagram account (@melon.skates) so if you can go there and follow it I would be very happy I’ll see you in my next post! 🌷
